Welcome to SQL for Beginners: SQL & T-SQL Fundamentals (Free).

This course is intentionally paced as Part 2 of a structured beginner series. It is a beginner-friendly introduction to SQL and T-SQL before progressing to database development and relational database projects. Rather than introducing databases and SQL queries immediately, the focus is on helping you become comfortable writing and executing simple SQL statements first.

Database creation, data manipulation and basic SQL queries are introduced in the next course. Larger relational database projects and relational data querying are introduced in the courses that follow.

This course introduces the key concepts of SQL through short, focused lectures, followed by simple, guided workshops where you’ll write, type and execute basic T-SQL statements yourself. These introductory exercises are designed to build confidence before progressing to database development in the next course.

It is Part 2 of a structured 4-course beginner series and follows the setup course.

You should already have a working SQL Server environment ready to use.

The focus of this course is building understanding through first execution. Rather than overwhelming you with databases and more advanced SQL concepts, you will build confidence by learning how SQL statements are written, executed and interpreted before progressing to the next stage of the series.

You will learn what SQL is, how it is used to interact with relational databases, and how it differs from database-specific implementations such as T-SQL (at a high level). You will also see where SQL is used and why it is a standard language for working with data.

In the workshop sections, you will run practical T-SQL examples to validate and observe behaviour directly. These include:

• Checking your SQL Server version

• Returning output using PRINT

• Working with simple expressions

• Using the + operator with numbers and text

• Writing and using comments in T-SQL

These are small, guided examples designed to help you become comfortable writing and executing SQL statements. The workshops intentionally reinforce the same techniques through repetition, helping beginners build familiarity and confidence before moving on to database development.
