Why good specialists struggle as managers
A strong specialist is promoted and gets a team. Nobody explains how to hire, how to talk about pay, what to do with a person who has stopped trying or how to say no. The new manager does what feels natural: works more, controls more and takes the hard tasks back. The team waits, and the best people start to look elsewhere.
What changes after this course
You hire people who fit the role. You hold one-on-one meetings that people do not dread. You delegate with clear expectations and give feedback that is heard. You notice demotivation and burnout early. You can explain a salary decision and set goals the team accepts. And you choose a leadership style for the person and the task.

Who is teaching
I am Mike, the #1 HR instructor on Udemy, with 1,800,000+ course enrollments from 170,000 students, and the author of about 200 books on Amazon. I built the people system at Preply as it became a unicorn and worked at Wargaming, iDeals and Alfa-Bank across 20 years in HR. I hold PHRi, SHRM-CP and HCI sHRBP certifications and represent HRCI in Eastern Europe.
I became a manager in 2010 at the STB television channel, with a team of about six people that kept growing. I had little management experience. I managed as best I could and thought I was a good manager, but sometimes my employees complained about me. My own manager, the HR director, said that I should work on my management skills and that coaching would be the best way. I trained and started to apply it with my team. I also remember how the channel’s CEO opened our one-on-one meetings: “So, how are you?” It showed real interest, and it is very different from jumping straight to the project.
